The big blind is the second-worst position at the table. In this lesson, you will find the typical pre-flop ranges for playing from the big blind in a No-Limit 6-max game. Compared to the small blind, you have better pot odds for just calling a raise and your call usually closes the action, making sure that nobody behind you can go for a squeeze.
You will also learn which characteristics and tendencies of the standard opponent played a part in the creation of these ranges.

Why these ranges?
The ranges for defending the big blind against open raises from UTG or MP are rather tight while the ranges against the wide open raising ranges from the cut off and especially the button and small blind are a lot wider themselves.
Since most opponents only raise 2-2.5BB from late position, you get good pot odds for calling, and you can defend a lot of hands profitably against these wide ranges. It's important to attack these wide ranges post-flop by going for an increased number of check/raises and OOP floats.
The same goes for open raises from the small blind. The standard opponent on which these ranges are based raises a very wide range from the small blind which is why your range for defending it is relatively wide itself. Keep in mind that open raising ranges of your opponents from the small blind may vary a lot. They can go from a tight 25% range to up a range of virtually 100%. The higher your opponent's open raising range, the wider should your 3-bet and call ranges from the big blind be.

The small blind is the worst position at the table since you will always be out of position when you play a hand. This is something you need to consider for your hand selection.
In this lesson, you will find typical pre-flop ranges for playing from the small blind in a No-Limit 6-max game. These are  primarily designed to be a response to raises in front of you because usually you are  already facing a raise when it's your turn to act.
Due to the positional disadvantage, you mostly have to follow a tight approach, but you can expand your calling and 3-betting ranges quite profitably against the wide open raising ranges from the cut off and button. There is no need to wait for premium hands.
In this article, you will also learn how to continue with your open raising range against a 3-bet from the big blind.

Your open raising range has been designed for the standard opponent who has a solid defending range in the big blind. Keep in mind that you can open raise 100% from the small blind if the BB folds more than 62.5%. Since the standard opponent in the BB 3-bets a lot against open raises from the SB, your defending range against 3-bets is relatively wide.
The open raising ranges from the cut off and button are usually quite wide, and calls from the small blind are often under attack by high barrelling frequencies post-flop. That's why you should attack the wide ranges of your opponents with an increased number of check/raises and OOP floats.

The button is the best and therefore most important position in your game. That's why you play the most hands from the button. The reasoning for this is twofold; firstly you call and 3-bet more against raises in front of you due to your position and secondly you will also attack the blinds with a wide range. However, you need to be prepared to face some opposition in the form of either 3-bets or calls.
In this lesson, you will find the pre-flop ranges for playing from the button in a No-Limit 6-max game. Next to a wide open raising range you will also learn which characteristics and tendencies of the standard opponent played a part in the creation of these ranges.

Why these ranges?
The most likely result of minraising is that you will play against a wide range with initiative or win the blinds straight away. That's why the open raising range of 60.5% is relatively wide.
For playing against an open raise from other positions, the 3-bet range is again relatively wide and the bet sizing of 8BB rather small. Through this you are trying to encourage your opponents to have a capped call 3-bet range. In these cases, your top range will dominate their top range, and you create so-called cooler spots in which your opponents have a strong hand in terms of absolute strength, but are still dominated by your top range. You will also be able to make a lot of continuation bets and make use of the high fold equity.
How standard opponents play against the button
Against a 2BB open raise from the button, the small blind defends with a 9% 3-bet range and a 10% cold call range. The big blind defends with a 7% 3-bet range and a 38% call range. The play from the big blind is mostly focused on realizing equity and he will therefore try to go to showdown with marginal holdings.
Against an 8BB 3-bet from the button, the standard opponent in the positions from UTG to CO calls with a wide range after his open raise. He will often fold to continuation bets and it is also worth noting that his call 3-bet range is capped since he 4-bets all premium hands.                                                            / w/ [2 d" }( k0 \, u+ t% ^# V

Why these ranges?
Your open raising size (2.5BB) is a little smaller than from UTG and MP (3BB each). This makes your steals more profitable as you risk less to win the blinds.
Especially from the CO it is advised to tailor your open raising range specifically to the players behind you. If they are not very likely to call or 3-bet, you can open raise even more hands. Considering the button's 3-bet range of 8-12%, you should have both a 4-bet and a call range against his 3-bets.
Your call 3-bet range should be wider against the blinds than against the button due to your positional advantage.

MP Pre-flop Ranges
In this lesson, you will find the typical pre-flop ranges for playing from MP in a No-Limit 6-max game. You will be introduced to an open raising range as well as to a range against open raises from UTG.
You will also learn how to proceed with your open raising range after a 3-bet from a player sitting behind you, and which characteristics and tendencies of the standard opponent have played a part in the creation of these ranges.

Why these ranges?
Open raises from MP3 are frequently under attack from 3-bet ranges between 8%-10% from the cut off and the button, but rarely from the blinds. Very few players in the big blind are willing to go for 3-bet/5-bet with AK and QQ against an open raise from MP. That's why you fold a lot less against 3-bets from the cut off or button compared to 3-bets from the blinds.
The open raising range of 17% is more on the tight side of things and was created with the high 3-betting frequencies from cut off and button in mind. That's why you can often respond very aggressively with a lot of bluff 4-bets against 3-bets from these positions.
Considering the tight "3-bet/5-bet" range of the big blind, you won't have a "4-bet/call" range in this spot. It would have to be very tight (KK+) in order to be profitable and would therefore be very easy to read for your opponents.

Why these ranges for UTG?
UTG ranges are usually under attack from polarized 3-bets from MP, the cut off and the button. Depending on the UTG open raising range, your opponents will have a 3-bet frequency between 4-10%. AK and QQ will often just call against an open raise.
A 13% open raising range from UTG is a tight range and there are two reasons for this: one is that there are five players that can attack your range and the other is the fact that a ** raise doesn't take down the blinds frequently enough.
A database analysis has shown that 44-22 and ATo can't be played profitably. Suited and connected hands such as  J9s+,  T8s+, 97s+, 87s, 76s are better in playability since you will hit a flush draw or a straight draw more frequently. You can bet with these hands on multiple streets and make it difficult for your opponents to go to showdown with their top and middle pairs against your UTG range.
When playing against 3-bets you should always have two ranges. A passive call 3-bet range and a 4-bet range. In order to make your call 3-bet range not too exploitable, you should add a couple combos of AA and KK.
